This Passover, the over 960 students at BTJ have had to leave the safety and security of the school to return home to situations that were bad and are even worse now. The families that were struggling financially, emotionally and with health issues are now faced with even more dire circumstances. In some cases, where boys could not “go home”, the school has worked to place them in safe environments.

CONTINUING TO EDUCATE
The teachers are using video lessons and assignments to ensure the students don’t fall behind. They are also available by phone to provide extra help to those in need. Special efforts will be made to prepare high school students for the upcoming critical Bagrut matriculation (government) exams.

PROVIDING EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Social workers are working full-time from their homes to keep in daily contact with the boys and their families. “For them, and for all of us, it’s now crucial to talk, communicate and share emotions,” says social worker Hadas Knopf.

ASSISTING WITH FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES
Almost all BTJ students receive assistance with their tuition costs. Registrar Rachel Cohen-Pur, reports a deluge of phone calls from parents whose financial situations have reached crisis proportions. Many were struggling desperately to pay their son’s already-reduced tuition. Now with so many parents losing their jobs, they cannot afford to contribute anything. The school is suspending tuition payments indefinitely.
